Using expired and lapsed patents

Patents expire 20 years after filing, lapse when renewals are not paid, or are withdrawn. Their teachings are then free to use in that jurisdiction — a huge, searchable library of working designs. Check: the status in the official register, whether a family member is still alive in your market, and whether a newer patent covers an improvement you would also use.

The community's reuse bank shows the status, source and the date it was checked, and lets you request a reuse assessment, prototype support or manufacturing connections.
