Reducing road-traffic injuries among two-wheeler riders

PRB-00004 · India · 4 views

Background

Road-traffic injuries are a leading cause of death for young people worldwide (WHO). In India, two-wheeler riders and pillion passengers form a large share of fatalities. Helmet quality and use, visibility, road design and post-crash care all contribute.

Who is affected

Riders, pillion passengers (often children), emergency responders

Existing approaches

Helmet laws and enforcement, ISI-marked helmets, reflective gear, speed management, trauma-care protocols, crash-detection apps.

Their limitations

Comfort and heat reduce helmet use; child helmets rarely used; delayed emergency response; poor crash data for targeted engineering.

Desired outcome

Products, materials or systems that raise correct helmet use (including for children), improve rider conspicuity, or shorten time to care.

Success criteria

Measured change in use or response time in a pilot; conforms to applicable standards; affordable for mass adoption.
